What is a stainless steel crown?

When a baby tooth has a large cavity or has had a pulpotomy, a stainless steel crown may be needed to save and protect it. The crown is a pre-formed silver cap that fits over the whole tooth and holds it together until it falls out naturally.

02

When are silver crowns recommended?

  • Large cavities that affect several surfaces of a back tooth
  • After a pulpotomy or pulpectomy
  • Teeth with developmental defects that make them weak
  • Children at high risk of new cavities, where full coverage gives the most protection
03

Why parents choose them

Stainless steel crowns have been used in pediatric dentistry for decades. They are strong, last until the baby tooth is naturally lost, and protect the tooth from future decay. For a more natural look, ask about white zirconia crowns.

Read all parent questions →

Will a silver crown bother my child?

Most children get used to a crown within a day or two. The gums may be a little sore right after treatment, which usually improves quickly.

Do silver crowns set off metal detectors or affect MRI scans?

No to metal detectors. For MRI, let the radiology team know your child has stainless steel crowns so they can plan accordingly.
