Step by step

  1. 01

    Evaluate

X-rays confirm the tooth can't be saved and check the adult tooth below.

  2. 02

    Gentle removal

The tooth is removed gently while your child sleeps.

  3. 03

    Stop bleeding

Gauze is placed to help a clot form.

  4. 04

    Heal at home

Soft, cool foods and rest for the first day while the area heals.

01

When is an extraction needed?

An extraction may be recommended when a baby tooth is unrestorable, meaning too much of it is broken down to repair, or when an infection could harm the developing adult tooth. Other reasons include crowding, teeth that are not falling out on their own, and injuries.

02

What to expect

Under sedation, your child is asleep and comfortable. The dentist removes the tooth gently, and gauze is placed to help a clot form. If the tooth was lost early, your dentist may recommend a space maintainer.

03

Healing at home

  • Bite on gauze as instructed until bleeding slows
  • Soft, cool foods for the first day
  • No straws, spitting, or rinsing hard for 24 hours
  • Watch that your child doesn't chew a numb lip or cheek

Will my child need a space maintainer after an extraction?

Sometimes. It depends on which tooth was removed and when the adult tooth is expected. Your dentist will let you know.

How much bleeding is normal?

Some oozing or pink saliva is normal for the first day. Steady bleeding that doesn't slow with gauze pressure should be reported to us right away.
